OR Surgical Technician

FT-DAYS AND CALL

 

POSITION SUMMARY: The Operating Room SurgicalTechnician is responsible for aiding the Registered Nurse or physician in delivering patient care to those patients requiring surgical procedures during the pre-operative, operative and immediate post-operative recovery phases.  Maintain patient/staff confidentiality.

 

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Minimum Education:

  • High School Graduate
  • Graduate of a Program in Surgical Technology preferred but not required

     

Minimum Experience:

  • Prefer 1 year experience in the Operating Room but not mandatory

 

Minimum Field of Expertise: 

  • Participates in continuing education
  • Knowledge of new trends and techniques in OR technology

 

Required courses/training:

  • CEU's to maintain Certificate if applicable
  • BLS

 

Required certification:

  • Current CST Certificate if applicable
  • BLS affirmation

 

Physical Demands: 

  • Heavy physical efforts
  • Frequent prolonged standing/walking/sitting
  • Frequently lifts supplies/equipment
  • Must be able to lift arms above head
  • Manual dexterity and mobility
  • Frequent reaching/stooping/bending
  • Must pass the Physical Capacity Profile Testing (3)

 

Required protective equipment: 

  • Standard precautions when indicated:  a.exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, electrical equipment; b. chemical hazards, and slippery surfaces; c.  exposure to noise and noxious odors.
  • Eye protection
  • Sterile & non-sterile gloves
  • Mask to cover nose and mouth

 

Vision requirements: 

  • Ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more
  • Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less
  • Ability to see peripherally

 

Hearing requirements:

  • Must be able to hear when spoken to in soft/low tones with constant background noise. 

 

Working conditions: 

  • High stress due to type of occurrences associated with an OR
  • Subject to be called upon at anytime of the day or night to assist in

 

Emergency cases/situations

  • Responds by telephone/pager to this facility upon notification of a surgical  procedure
  • Required weekend and holiday work
  • Subject to over time and low census days due to fluctuation in workload
  • May be subject to call back for mass casualty situations

Degree of Supervision:

  • Must be able to work under direct supervision of RN Circulator

 

DUTIES OF A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST 

  • Assist with assessment of patient in planning for patients needs while in surgery.
  • Through appropriate planning and implementation of procedures insuring that each patient receives safe optimal care i.e. room readiness, transportation of patient, surgical checklist noted and acted upon appropriately, dress code followed, assist anesthesia as needed, proper positioning of patient, proper prep, draping procedure, maintenance of aseptic environment, general knowledge of procedures, readiness of supplies and instruments, organized, count taken at appropriate times, specimens handled properly. 
  • Maintains a good rapport with physicians.
  • Cleans operating room and handles contaminated instruments according to departmental policy and procedures.
  • Provides a calm, quiet atmosphere.
  • Is familiar with hospital safety policy.
  • Recognizes legal responsibilities and functions within limitations as specified by law.
  • Meets CPR requirements.
  • Assists other staff members as needed.
  • Participates in patient education process.
  • Participates on assigned committees.
  • Provides the patient and family with explanations of procedures.
  • Attends 100% of all staff meetings/mandatory classes unless excused by the Unit Manager.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies and equipment necessary for delivery of care.
  • Functions with accuracy, speed and cooperativeness in handling of emergency situations.
  • Participates in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Performs care to patients in a manner reflective of the hospitals philosophy and objectives.
  • Maintains knowledge of All Hospital Plans; Department of Nursing/Unit Policies & Procedures;  Infection Control Manual and the Personnel Policy Handbook.  Work performance is consistent with these policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for knowledge of and safe operations of all equipment.
  • Responsible for all supplies being present for the case.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities as directed by the Unit Manager.
