KU Residency: Program

University of Kansas Family Practice Residency

Junction City Rural Track

Track is the last rural residency of its type in Kansas. It combines the same high quality instruction and education available on the Kansas City campus with a full-spectrum of real-life rural family medicine. It's ideally suited for physicians considering practice in a rural community.

Residents who choose the Junction City program spend the first 12 months at the University of Kansas Medical Center in the traditional university-based program under the direction of the Department of Family Medicine. The final 24 months will be completed in Junction City at Geary Community Hospital.

The Junction City Rural Track Program was originally a longitudinal experience, but has evolved into rotational experiences in all of the major areas of family practice. Residents are able to gain experience in rural medicine, surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine, dermatology, obstetrics, and gynecology. There are also electives available in cardiology, urology, pulmonary medicine, nephrology, and other allied specialties. Integrated into a 24 month plan, residents are able to gain experience in a variety of fields.

Residents will also learn to independently manage care of patients in both a clinic and hospital setting. This will teach them how to administer full time care to their own patients. Another feature of the Junction City Rural Track program is to learn the details of managing a medical practice and discovering the exciting variety of pathology and complex illnesses that are present in the rural environment.

Residents will receive a a salary differential for years 2 and 3 of $10,000, plus moving expenses from Kansas City to Junction City.

To apply, residents should contact the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center or Ronald D. Mace, M.D., Assistant Program Director of the Junction City Rural Track, at (785) 762-4884 or rmace@gchks.org.
